Hi Briana!

Your leg creates the extra energy, and your seat helps to dictate the rhythm. So you must make sure that your horse is first "in front of your leg". Fairly rapid trot - walk (or halt) - trot transitions are a great way to prepare for a trot lengthening, as the way the horse steps from walk or halt into trot is quite similar to the way they move from working trot to trot lengthening.
