A Gentleman, A Dragon, And A Dreamer
Well I am days away from leaving life as I know it. I have made the decision to pack up my perfect little life here in Ohio and drag two horses to the independent country of Florida. I graduated high school at the end of May and I have been preparing for the move to Florida since...5 days ago...remember I am the procrastinator. No, actually I started preparing for this adventure last year when I stumbled upon a little community college in the middle of “horse country Ocala”. I had been looking for a College that would offer the right program for my equestrian needs and this one fit the bill. I am pursuing an Equine Exercise Physiology degree with the intent to integrate it into my riding and training. We’ll see how that goes....
In addition to college I also had to set up work because horses are expensive and apparently I am now, at the ripe old age of 18, considered an adult...who pays bills and buys my own groceries and is responsible...Anyways I got a chance to fly down to Florida, say “hey” to my Aunt and Uncle and meet Tik Maynard a 3* rider with a specialty in Natural horsemanship. He is also the husband of Sinead Halpin, accomplished 4* rider and Rolex top 10. It is with these incredible equestrians that I will work alongside when I arrive in Florida.
Finally, I had to have a place to live in Florida so my mother did some searching and found an awesome apartment in the barn my horses will be boarding. Who doesn't want to sleep in the barn, right? It is actually the likes of a top notch hotel room so at least I won’t have to ward off the barn mice.
So everything is ready to go. I even found a hauler for my horses. The only thing not ready to go is me. Mostly because I still haven't packed up my normal clothes, show clothes, horses clothes, and all of the tack necessary to ride them. All jokes aside though the last couple of weeks have felt like I am dying. Dramatic I know, but when everyone keeps looking at you sadly, offering words of encouragement, forcing hugs (I'm not really a hugger though I have improved over the years) and telling you goodbye, you could easily believe you were dying. I guess in a way I am.
When you choose to leave everything/everyone you know and move a thousand miles from home, you choose to end one life and begin another. I will agree with those who have said that dying isn't easy. It is sad and scary, but I keep believing that there is some sort of equine heaven on the other side. Fortunately, I am not alone for I have two horses to guide me into the next life. Who better to support me in my dreams than a perfect gentleman and a mighty dragon?
